Who is Richard?
Good question! He started the lab back in 1970. In the beginning he took in the orders all day and printed them himself all night! He had a good relationship with several pro's that kept him busy for many years mostly working with the music industry.
When he wanted to retire about 8 years ago I left the larger lab I was running and bought RPL. When I started here there was no website, all orders were on little carbon copy forms and he had only recently started taking credit cards!!
Boy how times have changed! -
What is it that makes you different from other photo labs? I'm deciding between a local lab and shipping it off to you guys!
Good question...
We are set up to work with photogs and adjust what we do to your preferences. As simple as that sounds, it's actually opposite from how other labs do it. Currently we have about 400 custom Color PACs in use and adding more every week. That's 400 different ways to adjust scans. We also work with so many different types of photogs, like fashion, fine art, lifestyle, and wedding that this helps us understand the creative process.....
We also try and provide photogs with information, solutions, ideas and other ways to improve their business.
We actually are more of a smaller custom type shop, more on customer service and no national ad campaigns. Most labs that you see ads for have 100 to 1000 employees, we have 25!!
Do a side by side test, that should help you decide!! -
Big fan of Clyde Butcher's landscape work, what B&W medium format film do you recommend that can produce similar look, especially the contrasts that he gets?
He is a pretty straight shooter, no special film or developer, just well exposed negs, great lens all under great lighting conditions. Tmax film in Tmax dev, so results would be similar in our Xtol.

what do you think about "alien exposure 3" ? i'm strugling to get nice tones with the 400h preset any advice?
Why don't you just shoot Fuji 400h if you want that look?
I don't own said program and me using it would be like putting ketchup on spam. It's just not natural. -
Do you sign the prints ordered from your personal work collection?
No seems super pompous. You are buying prints, not my overrated John Hancock

Do you have any insight about why film companies are favoring 120 over 220? Is it just cheaper to produce?
Straight from fuijis mouth Rey said te technology To Make the backing of 220 was finishing or too hardy do which um it is 2011 and I doubt any kind of technology had anything to do with Fuji discontinuing their 220. It was because the numbers were not there for them
Financially. But apparently the numbers are there for 3d cameras #gougemyeyesout -

Apologies if this has already been asked - In your opinion, what time of day is the best time of day for a photo shoot?
when the client wants to shoot.
