Black. Black is not bound by geography, by nations, by tribes. Of course there is the matter of being born African and raised Californian, but I will take the freedom of being simply human any day.

Yeah.. none of the above. I'm not a pet person at all. Oh but I will raise tadpoles!

Grab the baby because she likes to be held and she's just fussing. Let the rain fall on the clothes, turn off the water as I walk to the front door and open it to find my brother pushing furiously at the doorbell while my mom's on her cell calling me to let them in (*rolls eyes*). Let the rain fall on the clothes because I probably don't even remember they're out there in the first place.

      Bam.

I'm exceptionally bad at keeping myself accountable. This is also because I'm exceptionally bad at remembering things I say. I'm working on it by writing things down in notebooks and telling people on twitter. :|

I'm exceptionally good at coming up with ideas. I may not know how to execute them, but they are some damn good ideas, if I do say so myself.

      And, yes. I do.

Actions, action, action. I say this because I'm working on this personally: keeping my word and finishing things. Often I'm all talk and no walk and I don't want that to be my legacy. We can come up with the most eloquent theories and sentences, but in the end, our actions will define us.

Not to say that words have no meaning or power, because they do. But it's the ACT of speaking and writing that gives them their power. Context.

You ever people say "X said a lot of great things, we'll miss him/her"? Nah. People say others are good or bad based on actions.

I like what you're doing with formspring, by the way!

I believe in God's judgment. Sounds epic, cos it is, but really revenge is only for a moment. It's never satisfying. On the other hand, sometimes you can't just let things be. Sometimes you see something that's wrong and you have to step up, speak up, do something, move something.

I would tell young Ann to ask for help. Ask questions. It's okay to not know the answers. Even if you look like an idiot, it will just be for a little while. I'd be all, "Girl you are not superwoman! Let yourself love! And stay away from leadership positions in the black student union. It will ruin your GPA."

And if by some magical twist of realism my older me did visit my younger me with this advice, you best believe I'd listen.

Afrolicious started out as my twitter handle. I was using simplyann all over the web and I thought, let me switch it up for this new fangled thing. That was in 2007.

Afrolicious the website started in June 2008. As an internet addict and a visual artist voyeur I got tired of seeing the same pale inspiration blogs over and over again. You know the ones on the white background with photos of skinny chicks in odd positions and pastel patterns on near-white walls. Just, ugh. Can we get some brown up in here please? And color - wow me with some yellow!

In a fit of pure inspiration, I took the silhouette of my head (yeah that's my head) and created the logo you see today. I plan to make it the space to see, hear and experience the story of brown skin through images, words, music, images, sound, poetry, poems, art, and images images images images. Because our culture tricks us and imprisons us with images, what better way to counter those attacks with a good dose of imagery ourselves?

This year I want to flood Afrolicious with exposes on artists who fit this vision. Music that makes you feel some kind of way. Meaningful words that inspire you to go forth and be. I have two photo projects in the works as well as a summer tour of the States (yes! the blog will tour!) and of course stickers and shirts.

      Stay tuned!
