I questioned a co-worker why people eat ham for Easter when the Bible says not to consume swine. She said that no longer applies because it was part of the old testement. Does the new testement mean the old doesn't apply to our lives?

The Old Testament contains rites and rituals for the children of Israel as under the Old Covenant. We are under a New Covenant and the restrictions of certain foods are not applicable and therefore does not apply to the church.
