Any tips to new game makers?
People will tell you, "Make the game YOU want to play / make", and I think that's bad advice. You will hate any game you're making after a week into development. It will become boring and you will forget what's fun about it and why you started it in the first place. You will get so wrapped up in what the game actually IS in this early, ugly stage of development that you will forget what you want the game to be.
Make games for other people. Make a game for your best friend, or your parents, or the person you're in love with, but don't make one for yourself. It becomes really difficult to separate your experience playing the game from your experience developing it, so you can never appreciate it the way others can.
So make it for them. If you want to play a game, play a game. Don't make a game because you personally want to play the end result. The joy of MAKING a game comes when you show it to the world.
