When I was interviewing for the job I have now, I wore a black and white button-front knit shirt dress from Torrid that I got secondhand off of Lesley from fats.com - Dump Truck Friday on fatshionista.livejournal.com can be AMAZINGLY useful. I wore it with yellow mary janes (from Target - they have a ruffle), conservative makeup topped off with a red glossy lip, and with my hair pulled back (though still vaguely blue at the time. I dressed like ME because I don't have it in me to work in a place where I have to pretend to not be me every single day. That's totally a luxury and not everyone has it. But this last time around it was very important to me that where ever I wound up working would be a good fit for me culture-wise as well as work-wise. I think I found that fit.
Florida tends to be a little more casual sometimes, though, and editing isn't REALLY considered a creative field but sometimes it is close enough. You have to guage your interest in the job, the culture of the company, and the compromises you are willing to make. -
You know, I am hard pressed to think of a bad date. I went to prom with a really nice dude the year after I had graduated and it was just awkward and weird but even that I'd have trouble qualifying as a BAD date.
For me, a date is about spending time with a person I want to know better. So events might shit the bed but as long as the person and I can keep a conversation going then I am totally entertained. -
Freya the Puppyface is teething but if you're in O-town and ready to deal with that, she is ready to meet you.

Remember that part in the Labyrinth where Ludo summons the rocks? And there are rocks bouncing all through the Goblin City, chasing goblins down alleyways and up staircases and all over the joint?
If we were standing in a Ross parking lot and we got hit by lightning that gave us superpowers, my superpower would be calling the fats the way Ludo calls the rocks. There would be awesome fatties rocking interesting fatshions running all over the place (or wheeling or walking at their own pace or whatever their preferred form of locomotion happens to be) - no one would expect it, there would just be fat people everywhere, inescapable and visible and fan-fucking-tastic.
I think that'd be useful. -
I worry a lot. Like, I'm just a worrier. And so I spend a lot of time worrying that I Doing It Wrong somehow, that I'm failing to represent Fat Acceptance as well as it should be represented, that I'm isolating and alienating people who should be most embraced by it, that I'm just fucking up.
That is, 100%, the hardest part of putting myself out there with it.
I've always been kind of weird kid, so having yet another reason for people to think I'm strange actually didn't make a huge dent in my ego. People would probably look at me funny no matter what I weighed because I tend to intentionally wear things that clash and I have blue hair and I'm kind of loud and obnoxious. *grin* But give me the impression that I have failed the community of people that have somehow come to look to me for some sort of advice? That's really when it's a challenge. -

You know, this should be a really easy question. But, from an actual fashion perspective, I shop so many different places and do so much altering and trying to make stuff work that designers themselves wind up off my radar. I love the idea of couture - but so little of it makes its way into fat fashion that it is, essentially, art that I look at sometimes.
From THAT perspective, I'd have to say that Gautier makes the stuff that I am most interested in looking at as art.
I also tend to follow Christopher Kane. I think he puts things together in a really interesting way. -
If it's NY-style pizza, just gimme some cheeeeeeeese and let me shake on some of that crushed red pepper. If it's deep dish or homemade, put spinach, mushrooms, chicken, and a lot of garlic on it. Oh, man, I am kind of drooling now. This is what I get for forgetting to eat dinner!
Which I will now go address. -
Oh, man, that dress is gorgeous. Except for those rosettes at the bottom. I'm not in love with those. But I love the way the sheer fabric is used as an overlay, and I like that it seems to have good movement and drape. That cut of shoulder works pretty well for me (I have kind of narrow shoulders) so I am digging that as well. Like, I think the dress has great details.
It's just those rosettes along the bottom. They confuse me. -
I get my glasses, and have for years, at Eye Associates of Winter Park. I love this place, seriously. My eye doctor is fantastic (and cute) and every person there is just really great. In fact, it's their fault I got into designer frames in the first place, with a super cute pair of red cat's eye frames with rhinestones on the corners.

The frames I have now, because people keep asking, are by OGI. They are frame 7130, in crystal.
That is SO not the most evocative name in the book, is it?
Before that, I had LaFont frames (black and white with flowers) that were, I have to be totally honest and say, wicked cool.
Glasses are just awesome. I've tried wearing contacts and it's nice to not have the fuss of cleaning smudges lenses and stuff but I feel like glasses can be so expressive! -
I have thought about this one a lot. I think it would be to do some of the things that scare you anyway.

I actually did not purchases anything from the Spring Color Forecast - I looked at it and it is all very pretty but it isn't quite what I feel like doing with my makeup these days.
My clear frames have me wearing eye makeup more often but my day-to-day routine still involves waking up at the last minute and just not wearing any. *laugh*
When I AM wearing it, though, I am playing with this lipstick called Our Pick which is the freakiest color in that it pretty much exactly matches my skin and I have the nudest lips ever when I wear it. I've been pairing that with a variety of eye looks and it is kind of fascinating. -
We are a very low-key Valentine's Day couple. While I love the cheesy positivity of the holiday (and passing out ridiculous cards), we are pretty gross all year round.
Which basically means we don't have any plans. *laugh* We're going to make breakfast, which we're trying to turn into a regular Sunday routine, and then we'll see what the day holds - probably some revision on the novel I'm writing and some calculus homework for him. Almost definitely some Dante's Inferno on the Xbox 360.
What can I say? Our idea of romance is kind of nerdy. -
Welding has always seemed like the ultimate glue to me - and metal soldering was kind of the stepped down version of that. When Ed came home with the supplies one day because HE wanted to learn it, there was no doubt that I wanted to learn, too.
And I wound up getting really into it - one skill led me to want to learn others.
Basic equipment that we started out with: torch, solder and flux, firebrick, anvil, pliers, and a hammer - that was really about it. I've increased my supplies as I have learned new skills but those are the things I use every time.
Metal working is fun and awesome. I highly reccommend it! Start with simple stuff (I made rings with flat silver stock) and see where it takes you. -
The Muppet Movie.
I could be all pretentious and choose one of the arty movies that I love so much but hands down, at the end of the day if I could only watch one movie ever again, it would be the Muppet Movie. I even have a tattoo of some Rainbow Connection lyrics, okay? I LOVE THIS MOVIE.
Other long-time faves include Six-String Samurai, Galaxy Quest, and Snow White: A Tale of Terror. -
Can I have a trifecta of favorites?
The Hunt for Red October - Tom Clancy - I don't even know WHY but I love this book. I've read it so many times that it doesn't matter where in the book I start reading, I know where I am. I think it is just a superb example of military suspense. It's THRILLING.
Magic Kingdom For Sale! - Sold! - Terry Brooks - This is the first in a series that did not live up to the promise of the first book. But the first book is all about reclaiming the things that are important to you in life and having the courage to make your life what you want it to be - and it's funny. I mean, who buys a magic kingdom out of a Christmas wishbook and expects it to be something out of a fairy tale?
As I Lay Dying - William Faulkner - I am a big Faulkner fan because I like to roll around in his language. I read it aloud to myself and I savor it. And As I Lay Dying is phenomenal both for that reason and as a portrait of putting one foot in front of another and being HUMAN. It's a genuinely enjoyable great novel of American literature. -

Vampire schmaltz is so cyclical - do you remember all the stuff that came out after Interview with the Vampire? I mean, dude. The market was flooded then, too.
It's one of those genres that is always sitting on the edge of our reading list - and there will always be teenagers discovering it.
We're already seeing some post-apocalyptic stuff coming back - which makes me happy. I'd like that to take off and incorporate some more steampunk elements. -
My standard answer used to be anything but country music. Except now I have found myself really enjoying old country and, like, trucker songs. I've always liked the classic Johnny Cash, but man, some of the 50s and 60s stuff is just choice.
My default is goth/industrial with a flavoring of electronic and EBM. I like music I can dance to - where dancing equals stomping around and doing bat dances.
Mostly, I have very little patience for pop music. However, Lady Gaga is catchy as hell and has a real grasp of spectacle that means I cannot resist.
And, basically, if David Bowie is involved, I'm there. -
Target. *grin* Seriously, go to Target and look at colors in person and see what appeals to you. Order some Urban Decay Primer Potion and the next time you are at a place where you or someone can match your skin tone and foundation, go for it. The rest really can be done with a little internet research.
There's an LJ community called eyeshadowsluts - they do sales posts on Sundays. I know that freaks some people out but you can get unused eyeshadow for decent prices if you are just wanting to try colors. AND it is a goldmine of information about swatching and what goes with what and what looks like what. MAC is a favorite there but they use all sorts of product - including the stuff commonly available at drugstores. It's really awesome.
The thing to do once you have some colors you love (and the basics of foundation and primer potion) is to practice. Makeup application, like any other thing, is a skill and you have to try new things without the pressure of being out the door in 15 minutes. I hang out with my makeup on nights where I don't have anything else to do and trawl through tutorials until I find something I want to try. Tutorials on youtube are SUCH a good resource!
Most of all, have fun with it. It'll wash off if you don't like it.
