I don't watch enough anime to warrant an answer from that point of view, so I'm going to have to answer from the perspective of books or video games.

In the books I read, I haven't noticed any set definitive trio of characters, but a good trio (if it counts) are the starter Pokemon. Mainly cause if you raise them properly, they can cover each other and then some.
