My dear, I need a bit of dread-help. I'm working on making my very first pair, but one thing I've noticed is that after backcombing two or three, I'm left with a HUGE ball of hair that was pulled off! Is this normal, and if it isn't, how do I prevent it?
Chances are you are backcombing out and away from you. Don't think of backcombing as just knotting up or fluffing out the hair....think of it as trying to comb it into a nice fluffy cactus with a firm center. ....confused?
Allow me to explain...
When you are backcombing hair for dreads you want to push down and *into* the shaft of hair. Make sure your comb is pointed down and angled toward you. You should not have much hair coming out of the section you are backcombing. When you comb, concentrate on trying to get the hair to knot or and condense in the middle...all the way up the entire length of the dread. If you did it right, it will look like a fluffy "cactus-like" shape and when you squeeze it, the middle should feel firm(ish) and somewhat solid.
Remember, keep the comb pointing down and angled in toward you when you backcomb!
