I don't think that it's fair to say that YU+ME didn't "stay with its plot." I mean, Megan was planning for Fiona to wake up the entire time. It's foreshadowed decently well throughout the story. And I mean, I would have read it through to the end if it had been a story about schoolgirl lesbians, but I was actually pleasantly surprised that it was more interesting than that.
Also I'm a sucker for elaborate worldbuilding and the constantly changing styles were a lot of fun to see when I was reading it daily, so there's that.
