What about maraschino crickets??
Thanks for the interesting question. You are a little off-topic but that’s O.K.
As I understand it, Maraschino is a bittersweet, clear liqueur flavored with Marasca cherries, which are grown in Dalmatia, Croatia. The liqueur's distinctive flavor comes from the Marasca cherries, and the crushed cherry pits lend an almond-like flavor to Maraschino. The distillate is allowed to mature for two years in Finnish ashwood vats and is then diluted and sugared.
Crickets are indeed edible. However, I have not heard of them being marinated in Maraschino before – at least not commercially. On the other hand, chocolate covered crickets are popular amongst bug-eaters. Are you one? Here is a link to one vendor selling gourmet chocolate covered crickets: http://www.candywarehouse.com/crickets.html
As for weddings, whether they are chocolate covered or pickled in Maraschino, I don’t see crickets overtaking the traditional candied almonds on wedding reception tables anytime soon.
Now, what I do see at your wedding is serving a custom cocktail that you could call “The Maraschino Cricket.” Try this combination of ingredients:
• ½ cup Crushed Ice
• ½ cup Lime Sorbet
• 1 Oz. Maraschino Liqueur
• 1½ Oz. frozen Premium Vodka (I personally like Reyka Vodka from Iceland myself & you should always store Vodka in the freezer – It’s the best way to keep and serve it – frozen. Besides, you never know when Rhoda and Pincus will be stopping by for a few shots – but that’s a story for another day)
• 1-2 drops green food coloring (because the lime sorbet is most likely going to be white but you want this cocktail to be green – like a cricket)
• Combine all ingredients together in a blender until the consistency of a Slushie.
• Now stir in 4 ounces of Sprite Soda. Be gentle, you want to loosen up the frozen concoction without flattening out the soda. As you know, crickets are “hoppy” critters and you want some spring in this drink to reflect that character.
• Pour the mixture into 2-4 Martini glasses (depending on the size of the glass)
• Finally, garnish with a lime slice and of course a Maraschino cherry
And there you have it . . . the “Maraschino Cricket.”
Aren’t you glad you asked?
Give this a try and feel free to adjust the ingredients to your personal taste. If everyone loves it tell them you got it by “Asking the Entertainment Expert of Raleigh Event DJ.” And if everyone hates it, tell them you got it from some other DJ company.
LOL Just KIDDING!
But seriously, each wedding couple is unique and each wedding has its own unique style and “flavor.” Why not make yours unique with a signature cocktail made special for that day. And 25 years down the road, you, your friends and your family will all still be drinking your special drink and recalling the first time they tasted that delicious treat – on your wedding day.
Enjoy and thanks for asking, Brad.
