Hmmm.... I haven't had any super horrible experiences. Butttttttttt, going home to the small rural parts of PA always has it's ups and downs for a queer like myself :)

It's worth to come out when you feel like it's the right time for you to do so. That's the only measuring stick you should use when deciding whether to come out or not. When it's right for you, that's when it will be worth it for you too.
As far as the right time to come out, there is no perfect moment, and there's no perfect way to do it. The most important thing is that you have to do it in a way that feels comfortable for you.
It sounds like a cop out, but coming out is something very personal that depends solely on how you feel.
