Great question, awesome track. I had the main music bed recorded already for a song i was working on. It was pretty involved, with samples and moog and MPC beats, the womans voice is from a 70's movie that ooooooo ooooo oooooooo. timpani , upright bass, organ etc. It was all mixed down to DAT. Nuno liked it and started writing a new melody and lyric over it. He ended up changing the order of the sections in really brilliant way. He played the guitars on it...did the vocals and came by the studio in a really bad snow storm to play me what he had done to it. i had lost my father not all that long before and for some reason it was like i was singing it to my father that first time i heard it. I cried, it was magical. its a bit lo fi because the demo was premixed to that original dat, but what nuno did with it is so brilliant. The outro solo is my all time fav nuno solo. One of my fav collaborations with nuno ever. thanks for asking . the song means the world to me even to this day. kind regards, ajax

this is very involved long story really. The song originally had an arena rock feel very loud drums and big guitars etc. it also had a coda that went on for another minute and a half or so. We spent two weeks trying to make that version work and they were not digging it at all. It was very "live" sounding and the tempo for the whole coda was faster than the song..... I always add loads of extra parts to duran tracks and blended them with there's . In this case i built a completely different master track with new live drums (one mic only) + all the sampled rhythm bits, bleeps etc...i also added the wurlitzer piano, all those layers of extra moody ambiences. (jupiter 6, juno 106, JV1080. Warren through a new bass line down and we were calling the mix a remix really at the time. When the band heard this version they prefered it to the original and it made the album. Simon was a little upset about me "throwing out the outro like bathwater" but i couldn't make the tempo work with all my triphop oriented soundscape, this was before really good time stretching... so i just ended the song early before the big rave up coda......it was the only way i could make it work! it wasn't a creative decision. and there you have "The rest of the story" Undergoing Treatment, Buried in the Sand, and a couple otherswere similar collaborations. A lot of people consider that record durans sgt pepper... and being a beatles fanatic, i can only say that nothing makes me happier! thanks for asking dusty, i'm back to guitaroverdubs... working alone today so i can easily goof off!.... kind regards.
