Hmmm... I never really dealt with that problem much, so I can't really say.

Well... it's more of a joke than anything, but... I've thought of a Pork Mushroom which turns Mario into a pig. As for abilities... I picture it allowing him to move around in muddy areas better (like those areas in the Galaxy games that have some brown muddy areas that you have a hard time walking through).
