Recently I went around the house and made a detailed list of projects I wanted completed. I wrote about the reasons why I did this here: http://pancakesandfrenchfries.com/2011/04/unstyled-life-21/
This year, instead of flowers or perfume or dinner out, I asked my husband to do something for me from the list. Flowers and dinner are great, but they don't last forever. A completed project, something that makes our home more comfortable or makes it more beautiful, lasts forever.
So, for me, the best thing a mom can get on mother's day is a gift that lasts for more than a day, something to remind her day in and day out that she is loved and valued. And, if you ask my husband, you only remove 50+ year old wallpaper from a cramped laundry room on your only day off for someone you really love. -
The best advice I ever received was to stay in law school. But not for the reasons many would imagine.
I was a very anxious, insecure student. I wanted to be at the top of my class, but at the same time felt I was always on the verge of failing and that I wasn't smart enough to graduate. During my second year of law school, I quit for two days. I did terrible on an exam, and just couldn't handle the pressure anymore.
The faculty called me and encouraged me to return. My mom thought I would regret quitting. So, I went back. And I worked hard. And I graduated and passed the CA bar on the first attempt. I did not think I would be able to do it (graduate) the first year and a half of school. I ended up doing very well. I didn't think I would pass the bar, but I did.
You can not imagine the confidence you walk away with after you achieve something you truly thought was outside the realm of your capabilities. It left me with a feeling of strength just short of power and confidence just short of arrogance. I now know that I am capable of anything I decide to accomplish, as is anyone. The formula is simple: perseverance + hard work + faith.
So, the best advice I ever received is "think of something you want more than anything but don't think you can achieve. Then do it." -
Oh, what a coincidence! I actually wrote about that on my blog and never finished the story. DON'T LOOK! I've been thinking of editing them and and reposting them. This is just the motivation I need to do it! I'll do it this weekend.

It started when I was about 12. I had a friend who collected unicorns (it was the 80s) and I wanted something to collect, too. I have no idea why I picked the elephant, but I remember telling my mom that I was going to start collecting them. She said that was a good idea since they were good luck. I was interested in superstitions, too, so when I heard that, it pretty much clinched it for me.
After I started reading up on them, I realized they are the perfect animal. ;) They are highly intelligent, social creatures. They hold funerals for their dead herd-mates and are protective of their young. Studies show they exhibit self awareness, which is the basis for empathy, altruism, and other complex social behaviors. I love even what they symbolize: wisdom, loyalty, courage, good luck, etc.
These are two of my favorite elephants, both gifts from my mom: http://www.flickr.com/photos/poemgal/3188513836/in/set-72157604069017009/ More so the silver Cristofle than the crystal because she happened to find one with topaz-colored stone (my birthstone). My friend, Tristan, also loves elephants and she bought me my other favorites--a tea pot and a Jonathan Adler ornament, which I keep on display year round because it's too awesome for just December. -
My favorite blog changes from day to day, with the exception of my friend, Nicole's blog called Making it Lovely.
Other than Nicole's blog, I'm really loving Summer Harm's blog. http://summerharms.blogspot.com/ She isn't a large or well known blogger, but I find her blog more compelling than most for some reason. I don't know exactly what it is that makes her my current blog crush, so I'll just mention a few things I love about her blog.
I feel as if I am reading an entry to her future grandchildren. The pictures and blog design are clean, simple, and aren't processed to death. Her love for her husband is very sweet, and I find her role as a housewife/homemaker inspiring. I was brought up to value career and education, so her perspective is refreshing and unique. If I have one complaint, it's her flagrant disregard for capital letters. That sort of stuff puts a bee in my bonnet. :) -
Holy cow, that's a hard one. We have had way too many great contributors. Some of my favorites have been the inspiration and life fulfillment classes, which haven't been as popular with the readers. You should never stop learning, especially if it's about yourself.

Ah, my fireplace. I don't love it. Actually, I used to hate it. It's big, bulky, and completely commands the room. I'm not a strong enough home decorator to work around such a challenge. But, since it's not going to change anytime soon, I decided to have a positive attitude about it. The rocks, on their own, are really beautiful. I just don't like so many of them piled up along one wall as a fireplace. ;) My husband loves mid-century anything, though, so he loves it.

I wore all black and listened to The Cure. Laughable, really, if you know my true personality at all, which is like my blog. I'm a (generally) optimistic and positive person.
Sadly enough, I also have pictures of me wearing acid wash Cavaricci jean shorts and a white t-shirt (Koala Blue?) with fluorescent "accents."
In both instances I thought I looked quite hot. -
Tough one! Well, aside from the obvious (that I loved them crazy) I want them to remember me as someone fun. That I was funny and made them laugh.

I just took a test, and it says I'm a Hufflepuff. Loyal, dependable, and hard working. Yawn.
-
Yes, I would love that! In fact, I was just talking about that with another blogger last night.

Both. Sort of. I need 6-7 hours of sleep regularly, so I can go to bed at around midnight and still get up at 6am to get Mikey to school on time. I write at night because it's quiet, but I do my best thinking and work (I think) in the morning.

I wouldn't change my name now, as I feel I have the best of both worlds. My nickname is common while my real name is unique. As a child, though, I thought I would be infinitely more cool if my name was Jenny.
