Lets start by addressing the headliner dilemma. So unless we’re talking about these two artists on the same stage, at the same time, performing each other’s songs(those are the rules), I’m calling bullshit and say on all other accounts there is a headlining act and a supporting act. Now, with two artists of their tenure, both are singer-songwriters, and each playing a mean guitar we are going to have to go with hard numbers on this one. Scaggs has one Grammy song win compared to Raitt’s 8 Grammy wins; 4 song wins and 4 album wins(including a coveted Album of the Year Award for her 1989 release “Nick of Time”). Without a doubt Raitt gets the headliner slot.
Could this be the best R&B concert of the decade? Not so sure I would go quite that far. Certainly it would make for a great show, but when I think of the genre categorization of these two artists I would put them in the Blues-Rock/Blue Eyed Soul category. R&B to me has become too much of a blanket term nowadays, especially for artists emerging after the sixties. The Blues-Rock category is chock full of heavy hitters(whom are still alive); Gov’t Mule, Derek Trucks, The Black Keys etc. Definitely enough firepower to come up with some awesome artist combinations.
So, I’ll go on record as saying it would be one hell of a show with two artists of complimentary sound and style in their genre. Happy listening and thanks for your question!
