I am lame enough to not have watched anything but the Discovery Channel and Cartoon Network through the 90's... and haven't really taken the time to look back...

That's hard to say... I've yet to find a book that touches the entirety of who I am. That said, Dune, Ender's Game, The Sun Also Rises, and The Giver have all been important and very special to me.

Oh yes. Ocam's razor - the simplest explanation that fits the evidence is almost always true.
The simplest answer to: the existence of the universe, the development of self-replicating life forms, the nature of consciousness, etc... is God. Hands down.
Seriously look at the stretching that has to go on for God-free explanations of the Universe and Life. It's pretty preposterous. -
You know, a yacht is probably cooler, and less expensive to maintain. Of course, I'd sell both... cause, I mean, I don't know how to fly or sail.

Well, this is difficult. My belief in an afterlife is drawn from my belief in a Divine Power. I personally identify fairly directly with Christianity, though I have many, many questions with that faith. However, my rational inquiry has led me to believe it is the most likely to be true of the major religions. It speaks of a life after physical death.
Existence after Death is a fundamentally irrational position. Any position from it is made without scientific evidence, because you can't research something outside this universe (yet anyway). Thusly there are no rational beliefs about this. The most Rational person in the world will have an irrational opinion here. Even denying it is essential opinionated guess work. The only source we have for the notion is religion, something that (in the West at least) has been denied the label of "rational."
So really, I believe it because I'm told to, and have no real evidence to the contrary. The amount of evidence pointing towards some sort of "higher power" is fairly over whelming. Every earthly interpretation of this higher power's will includes some form of post-physical death existence. There for, I'm going with the crowd, because there is no evidence to the contrary.
