I'm lesbian and my state just passed a law that gays cannot marry. Do you think that this will effect my life if I stay here? Because, I would like to marry. And I really don't know what to do, all my family is here, and what not. This is where I grew up.
It could absolutely affect you.
If you want to stay in your home state, there are some precautions you could take to protect your partnership. If your state offers civil unions or domestic partnerships, you could get one and hire a lawyer to draw up a living will and make your partner your power of attorney. (This might ensure you and your partner can see each other should one of you end up in the hospital.) And to offer some financial protections should your partner pass away.
BUT, these measures aren't always 100% effective and many same sex partners find themselves barred from seeing a sick loved one (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/19/health/19well.html?_r=1).
Or kicked out of their own home once their partner passes away and a family member of the deceased who was against the same-sex union decides to keep all assets, leaving the widow with nothing...
Or worse, adopted children being taken away if the surviving partner wasn't included on the adoption papers (which isn't possible in states that don't allow adoption by same-sex partners, like Florida, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.)
THIS is why equal marriage rights are so important. -
