How would you perceive a recruit who decided to furlough a year between high school and college, would that hurt their chances of playing in college?
You really want to check with NCAA rules on this. I think they are not allowing this any more. Or at least it may cost a year of eligibility. I wouldn't hold it against a recruit if it were within the rules, but I don't necessarily understand the value of it either.
