    1. Men Get Eating Disorders Too

      Hi there,

As you say it is a difficult circumstance to be in, but in all honesty the only way to be truly sure is to be direct and talk to him. You can find the symptoms and signs of Bulimia on our website http://mengetedstoo.co.uk/information/definitions-and-symptons/bulimia but by the sounds of it you have already done your research. It is a difficult conversation to have with someone but one which if done the right way can be a relieving conversation for the sufferer as well as a loved one. We have a section specifically on the subject of helping someone you know with or suspect they have an eating disorder http://mengetedstoo.co.uk/information/getting-support/how-to-help-someone

Hi there and thanks for your message.

There is no specific provision anywhere for that exactly, however, there is a specialist service for eating disorders and they will help you regardless, also being we are based in brighton we know there are pretty good support and advice services for gender identity and sexuality. There is also a specialist group for mental health in the lgbt community.

Your best bet is trying to discuss these issues with your doctor and they should be able to, identify the help you need and arrange the right services for you.

    4. Men Get Eating Disorders Too

The side effects of eating disorders include loss of bone and muscle mass, More hair than usual on the body, Poor skin condition sometimes a loss of sex drive or interest in sex and an increased risk of conditions involving the kidneys, heart and other organs. You can find more information on all the disorders and their effects on the website http://mengetedstoo.co.uk/information/definitions-and-symptons

Just as important are the psychological and emotional symptoms, which are often overlooked but can be just as damaging for someone to experience. This can include a lack of self confidence, low sense of self worth, depression , obsessive thoughts and behaviours surrounding food and a poor body image to name a few.

First of all, massively late reply so apologies! we have been mega busy with the launch of the new site and our conference :)

As for your question I would say it is very dependent on the person...... there are lots of different psychological therapies (talking treatments) available and these are really the only effective way of dealing with the emotional difficulties that lie behind an eating disorder.

Depending on people's individual needs they could receive CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) DBT (Dialectal Behavioural Therapy) Counselling, psychotherapy or a mixture of a few. There have been some people that prefer alternative talking treatments, NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) is the latest with alot of emerging evidence showing it's effectiveness.

In short there is no 'one size fits all' treatment for anybody and some people respond better to different approaches, the best thing someone can do is talk to their GP or mental health professional about what is available.

Information on various treatments that people may receive can be found on our site http://mengetedstoo.co.uk/information/treatment/what-various-treatment-options-involve this also includes information on inpatient treatment which I didn't cover in this answer.

    6. Men Get Eating Disorders Too

I think a big resounding yes will answer that one!! It will be the first event of it's kind and a much overdue one at that addressing the needs of specialist interest groups in eating disorders, in this case Men! hopefully we will see a conference for the diabetics group in the near future!

    7. Men Get Eating Disorders Too

This is very true and something we are actively trying to change..... for dad's there is our forum... where you can connect with other's and i am sure there will be people about on there who can help with any concerns and questions that anyone may have...... http://www.mengetedstoo.co.uk/index.php/forum.html

of course we are on all the popular social networking sites too, and if we can help with anything specific please let us know!

We do understand that there is not enough support out there for fathers who have sufferers there are some carers support groups out there depending on where in the UK you reside it is well worth researching, a good place to start would be our getting support page http://www.mengetedstoo.co.uk/index.php/getting-support.html

    8. Men Get Eating Disorders Too

Bulimia like any eating disorder can be life threatening if it is not treated.

Signs and Symptoms of Bulimia can include; a pattern of bingeing and vomiting, Excessive use of dieuretics and/or laxatives, Periods of fasting, excessive exercise as well as emotional effects like the uncontrollable urge to eat large amounts of food, Distorted body image and depression.

Obviously not everyone gets the same signs and symptoms and each person is unique to what they will experience

For more information on the signs and symptoms of bulimia see the page on our website http://www.mengetedstoo.co.uk/index.php/signs-and-symptoms/56-signs-bulimia.html

    9. Men Get Eating Disorders Too

See below..... we have already answered this one :) but if you want the answer again! Although there is little research, what research there is points to Bulimia being more common among both genders

    10. Men Get Eating Disorders Too

Another question where we find there is limited research available on the subject. Bulimia Nervosa as an eating disorder has a higher prevelence rate among both sexes according to the research available.

    11. Men Get Eating Disorders Too

It's a difficult one to answer.... that would be dealt with on a case by case basis by the professional treating that person. much like cases of anorexia and bulimia not everyone is treated in a "unit" and that is decided on an individual basis.

    12. Men Get Eating Disorders Too

There is very little research out there as to how many men actually suffer from Eating Disorders, those figures that do exist (Estimated are 10%-25%) are likely hampered by the fact that many men still do not come forward to seek help........ You can find some more information in the "facts" area of our website http://www.mengetedstoo.co.uk/index.php/information-a-advice/52-some-facts.html
