1 & 2) I am often awkward with this too. Cuz I feel bad for them now being single, but then if they are finally single (and hott lol) then I'm like FUCK YEAH. But then my empathy shines through and I generally don't respond to it.
3) If you've had a thing for them for that long, then you need to message them how you're feeling once they are single. Make sure you use empathy though, or they could get offended that you're hovering moments after they have a break up. You also don't want to end up being a rebound.
4) Of course your existing s/o will be upset, it's a dick move to "like" someone's single status in public. Hence the private message I mentioned in answer #2!
5) If they wouldn't mind, then I say still go with my answer to #4, but make sure your s/o knows where you stand. Which you should really do anyway out of respect to your relationship. Sneaking and hiding eventualizes into lying, and lying is a huge fucking NO NO. -

I would take the first plane out and find you, hog tie or straight jacket your ass, and put you in a padded cell in a nuclear bunker underground for 24 hours with me sitting directly across from you as gaurd. This way nothing could get to you, you couldn't harm yourself and it wouldn't be all bad cuz you would have me to talk to. :)
