This is a problem easily resolved by:

1.) Investing in make-up you can try on first. Yes - counter lip gloss is 2-3x more expensive, but let's face it - one good lip gloss, that perfectly goes with both seasonal trends and your skin tone - beats 3 that make you look like you only have florescent lighting in your home.
      OR
2.) Finding a colour you like and sticking to it. In my purse right now I have 8 different lip glosses, and they are all pretty much the same colour. The difference is in texture, shine, weight, transparency, etc.

I wish I followed my own advice, but I don't. I have dozens of lip glosses that are too brown, too frosty or too pink. I prefer an orange, gold, or berry based palate, and it is amazing how many products look different on your lips than they do in a package! I don't mind too much - sometimes, when I'm feeling blue, I'll lay all of my lip glosses on the counter and just smile at them, shiny and full of promise.

5:45am: woken up by toddler; stumble to kitchen for coffee. Lean, slumped, against the wall to wait for coffee.
6:00am: curse the fact that coffee takes so long to brew; realize I pushed wrong button on machine. Calm down. Drink coffee, play with my child, change clothes 3-4 times and still walk out of the house wearing something stained.
8:15am: Drive partner to work; drive child to school, drive self to office. Have more coffee, check email, FB, twitter, formspring... oh and prepare for class.
10:30-12: Class. Dazzle students with ability to be simultaneously brilliant and accessible.
12-3:30: Check email, FB, twitter, formspring, prepare for class, have meetings with students, write an editorial, think about stuff.
3:30-5:30: Class. Less dazzling than first class because caffeine fix has worn off.
5:30: RACE to daycare to pick up child. Pick up partner. Go home. Cook something. Play with child.
8:00: Lie down with child until she falls asleep, fall asleep myself.

That's my M/W schedule. On T/TH it is exactly the same except I have no classes to teach so instead I spend all day having meetings and thinking deep thoughts. Go to rehearsal from 6:30-10pm. Come home. Eat dinner. Fall asleep with clothes and makeup still on.

No. Usually if you are being brutal, you are not being honest. You are exaggerating. Honest is being straight-forward but looking at the whole picture. For example, if you say to someone, "you shouldn't wear that sweater; it makes you look like a total cow," in fact, you are lying. Unless the sweater is a cow-print with a hood that pulls up to reveal horns or cow ears, in fact what you mean to say is "listen, I know that knee-length sweater was on sale for $15 at Old Navy and is probably really warm and cozy, at least until you wash it and it falls apart, but I think it does you a disservice by covering up your boobs and your awesome junk in the trunk."

I'm sorry to break it to you, but the answer is: never. I have an eye for trends but not for innovation. My partner once said I was trendy but not stylish, which I found awfully offensive, but in retrospect I wish I had skipped low-rider jeans and empire waist shirts altogether.

To quote my friend Amy Nicole Miller, funny you should ask! I just happen to have four sections of a vintage grey almost-comfortable Herman Miller sofa for sale (don't tell my partner). I sure would hate to part with that ole heap, I mean... classic example of 1970's corporate furniture... but I guess I could let it go to a good, mod furniture loving home. And I guess I could make do with that extra large and super cozy sectional with a chaise lounge that I have been drooling over in the Ikea catalogue but which my partner says we can't buy because we already have a sectional sofa in our rec room.

I have almost as many nail polish colours as I do lip glosses, but I tend to stick to one or two per season. For my toes, I always do red, and almost always OPI I'm Not Really a Waitress. This fall, I've been sticking to Revlon's Silver, which is more of what I would call Shade of Grey Used to Paint Chicago Porches. When I'm feeling wild, I wear a neon blue, also by Revlon.

My field of study is Performance Studies, and it was/is an ideal fit for me. As an undergrad, I majored (fairly conventionally) in Drama, but minored in Gender Studies. I've always been interested in how performance might be used to address questions of social justice, and I've always been interested in how the media works to influence people. Performance Studies looks at both of these things - how performance works, and how society performs; and it has allowed me a language for my work that I didn't have before.

If you are asking how I came to study violence/lynching specifically, that's a question that has deep roots. I grew up with Jewish relatives who spoke often of the Holocaust, and of genocide. I also, while living in Columbia as a child, once passed a body being burned on the street. The image is haunting, and my whole life I have wondered what makes people treat other people so cruelly. My undergraduate thesis was on torture, my master's on witch burning, and my doctorate on lynching. Now, I think I need a little break and want to write a book about gossip/chisme.

Lately, I've had three in heavy rotation: Milani Buzz Worthy in Bronze with Bronze Glitter; Burt's Bees Super Shiny "Natural" Lip Gloss (I added the quotes) in Zesty Red; and Revlon Just Bitten in Gothic, which is technically a lip stain but I think it counts in this category because it comes with a lip balm.

You know, it is very possible that what *I* think is a funny IRX story is only funny to me, because I find my child so charming, but this morning I caught her rehearsing her crying in front of the mirror. She was pouting and tearing up and then she would laugh and laugh and start all over. And lately, she really likes to follow me around the house slapping my butt and yelling "Mama Nakey," even when I'm not, in fact, "nakey." And the other day, NX farted and IRX said "you pooped." And NX said she did not. And IRX said, Yes, You Poop!" And that went back and forth for longer than an argument between a 40 year old and a 2 year old should. Hilarious... right? Right?

      My favourite books are:
Winnie The Pooh by A.A. Milne - I think it is very funny and charming (and did you know Milne was a pacifist?)

Fugitive Pieces by Anne Michaels - she is a poet who wrote this beautiful novel about a holocaust survivor.

Ghostly Matters by Avery Gordon - this is an academic study of "hauntings and the sociological imagination," but it is written so beautifully I'm jealous and inspired every time I read it.

Blessing the Boats by Lucille Clifton - my favourite book of poems, and the title poem is my most loved poem.

What kind of question is this? And why did you ask it anonymously? I mean, if I knew you were, say, my hair stylist Irene, I would know you wanted to know why I walk around with it half curly/half straight even though you have told me a million times to heat style it. Or, if you were say, my coworker who always asks me if I've cut my hair, I would remind you that I'm not ashamed to say that on most days I wear extensions, except on days when I have accidentally dyed my hair a different shade of red than my extensions. Sigh... that happens more often than you might think.

Wow! I would not have spent so much time ignoring my formspring account if I knew there were questions like this on here. Sadly, I am not actually perfect, i just play a perfect person in my everyday life. I dye my roots every four weeks; I smile at small children, even when they are crying; I keep a bottle of whatever nailpolish I'm wearing in my purse for emergency touch-ups; and I try to donate more money to charity than I do to the M.A.C counter. If you look closely, you will see that I have a chipped tooth; road rage; and an addiction to caffeine. Also, I am very messy.
