Once I notice that my hilariously elaborate scheme to rob a regular bank is actually costlier than the amount of money I'd make pulling it off, I realize somewhere down the line I got really bored of all this.
Then I get recognized in the middle of a job interview that had been going really well up until that point. -

Isn't Spelunky a roguelike? I guess besides that and some flash game, the only one I've played is Binding of Isaac. I had to look up what permadeath was, and I've decided none of them really have permadeath in a traditional sense.
Spelunky allows you to unlock shortcuts to later levels if you collect enough money and get to checkpoints often enough. The flash game I played gives you new stat boosts to pick from at the beginning of a session depending on how you play, and Binding of Isaac gives you 1ups, and you can get unlockable items if you do the right stuff enough times.
So in other words, even though you die all the time, you're still making progress, and that keeps you going. I think it'd be pretty disheartening to play a roguelike where progress does nothing besides get you to the next room. -
