Am interested in using bamboo plantings as a privacy screen. I've heard it's best to stay away from invasive bamboos. Can you recommend a bamboo that would be good here in the Midwest and does Suburban carry that kind? Thank you.
We carry a few different species of clump forming bamboo. The species which will be the hardiest in our area would be the Fargesia rufa. While it maxes out at about 8 feet tall and wide, it withstands our summer heat better than the rest of them. Keep in mind that this species grows in an arching habit which will decrease the overall height.
Two other species that we carry are F. murieliae (shade lover) and F. nitida (more erect), both of which will reach a maximum height/width of 12 - 15 feet.
Bamboos are grasses and generally behave the same way. So, depending on your height requirements, if you need the taller, you may experience some crispy edges on your plants in July and August. You may be able to make them a little happier with some supplemental water, but only water in the early morning hours and do not allow them to remain wet.
Hope that helps! -
Which Boxwood shrubs are the hardiest?
We primarily grow 'Wintergreen', 'Green Mountain' and 'Green Velvet' boxwoods, but there are many other hardy varieties out there. Avoid the marginal Buxus Sempervirens Suffruticosa a.k.a. "True Dwarf Boxwood".
