      Cambridge Network members can:

      a) help us find new businesses and candidates and move them to the region by actively listing their news and jobs on the website and attending events to make the community lively and fun;

      b) come along on Monday 1st November (http://www.cambridgenetwork.co.uk/events/article/default.aspx?objid=75443) for lunch with Alex Plant, who is leading the project team setting up the LEP, and hear Ian White *(University of Cambridge), Alan Sibbald (Anglia Ruskin University) and Sian Reid (Leader Cambridge City Council) talk about their plans for the LEP. Chat to andrea.mitchell@cambridgenetwork.co.uk if you want to come.

      c) if you have £20M or more free and would like to co-fund some TICs we are doing a dinner on Thursday 4th November. Again, chat to andrea.mitchell@cambridgenetwork.co.uk if you want to come.

      East of England Development Agency covered a much bigger area, and had lots of money to do it. We live in different times. ;-)

      Cambridge Network is a business voice for the high technology community across the whole of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough region.

      We take an especially keen interest in technologies that are major employers in our subregion - cleantech, healthcare, ICT, consumer products design, high-value added agriculture etc. Our role is to raise matching funding and make irresistible bids to bring the best organizations and people to the region and retain them here.

      We are particularly keen to engage with local government and the third sector to ensure "public goods" like short transport times, good schooling, great entertainment and sports facilities, and a generally fair and equitable society with low crime and good outcomes for all.

      What role would YOU like us to play? ;-)

      A Local Enterprise Partnership allows our local businesses and citizens an active voice in attracting inward investment and building a great region to live in and work from.

      A good example is the Technology Innovation Centre (TIC: http://www.bis.gov.uk/assets/biscore/innovation/docs/10-843-role-of-technology-innovation-centres-hauser-review.pdf) initiative by BIS (http://bit.ly/asck9V). By working together as a community we have already raised promises of £100M in match funding in just one week. If we can make bids that position the Universities, local businesses and third sector to absorb a large share of the £200M that central government will give out for TICs, we can reshape the region and animate the science parks of Colworth, Stevenage and our own wonderful West Cambridge and Addenbrookes sites with brilliant technology commercialisation capabilities.

      Cambridge ideas change the world. We need to attract, develop and retain the next generation of talented people to keep that reputation.

      It is a group of industry, local government and 3rd sector partners who work together to sort out a region (http://www.cambridgeshirehorizons.co.uk/our_challenge/local_enterprise_partnership.aspx) . In our case, we are collaborating with a set of people from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough to bring about 160,000 jobs to the region and substantially improve the quality of life here to retain the great hi tech businesses we all know and love (http://www.cambridgeshirehorizons.co.uk/our_challenge/local_enterprise_partnership.aspx)

      Cambridge Electronic Design in the Cambridge Science Park. The CEO used to play fiddle in the Cambridge Crofters. I went off round the world for McKinsey, but they all just kept going and growing. Nice to see them all again.

      Uzbekhistan. Impossible to get into unless you have a visa from someone who is high up in the nomenklatura. But Samarkand was to die for (almost literally).

      Both. -20 in Toronto with brilliant sun is as much fun as +40 in Cordoba. But it had better be sunny!
