Yes I practice Kung fu :)

That would take time, and right now my priority is really to keep the story moving! Maybe later when this volume is being printed.

I had to learn myself, using many books and advice and a lot of practice. Still learning, really!

When Israel bombed a power plant in the middle of the night in '99 and then broke the sound barrier over Beirut. I was thrown out of bed by the unexpected explosion and thought I would die of the fright. I was never so shocked before or since.

I'm a bit particular in that I don't plan my trips, or as little as possible. I only check 3 things before leaving: if it's a good time of the year, if it's reasonably safe, and if it's affordable. I only book a room if affordable accommodation is hard to come by (for instance in Japan or London). In other places I just pick a guesthouse or hostel to start with before I land: these are places where you can take it day by day, stay more or move on as you like. I find that unless you have a specialized circuit in mind (such as the Tanzania safaris we did recently, which really require booking with a local, specialized agency) it's truly pointless and counterproductive to plan a trip from outside the country. Anything you need to know, and lots of things you won't find in any guide, you can find out during that first evening at a guesthouse frequented by other travelers. Once you're on the spot things are always so different, so much clearer, and opportunities open up, such as to join others traveling to the same places. So my advice is just to cover your basics and throw yourself out there so that you keep all your options open. Planning day by day gives great freedom, at any moment you can choose to stay, move on, or change your plans. There's nothing like allowing every aspect of it to be a surprise.
