Shounen. The bigger, the brawlier, the crazier, the better. I like shojou, but I love shounen.

Read Oglaf a few weeks ago, which was pretty funny. Read Order of the Stick years ago, and a roommate read nearly all the archives of xkcd to me a year or so back. That's the list of every Internet comic I've read. It's kinda short.

Don't read comics. Not manga, not American, rarely Web-only. I know that if I try to start, it will become a new obsession that will consume more time than I have right now. I have enough hobbies as it is.

Is this a lame reason to not read comics? Yup. But it's the reason I keep telling myself, for better or worse.

Seems like there's plenty of manga blogs to me, even if they don't reach the numbers anime blogs do. I also think they have a consistently higher level of writing, perhaps because reading manga involves a lot more reading and appreciation of a writer's skill with words.

Both of these thoughts are based on my personal experience, of course. I've never done an exhaustive survey of anime/manga blogs.

Yes and no. There are lot of aspects of the culture, especially its history and art, that I love more as an anime fan. But being an anime fan also made me aware of Japan's xenophobia, repressive culture, abusive work habits, and cratering youth culture. It's certainly not somewhere I would live- I'm too damn independent and ornery to try to fit in. But if I visit, I would probably spend a lot more time visiting temples and museums than the typical otaku trappings.

I have an account, but lost interest the moment I started filling out my profile. Social media schmoshel demia. Whatever.

It's an excellent series. Low key, profound, and often beautiful. Essential viewing for anyone who calls themselves an anime fan.

Gah, not long at all. Maybe a couple days before I'd get withdrawl symptoms. This is mostly because it's a constant link to news, twitter feeds and Reddit I constantly check during downtime when running errands and even when I'm at home.

Moribito. It's available pretty much everywhere and is excellent. Kamiyama doesn't get enough credit among fans- between this, Stand Alone and Eden of the East, he should have Shinkai-level name recognition by now. But he doesn't. That baffles me.

I'll give you a couple choices that are more unconventional:

Shikabane Hime: Largely dismissed as another Gainax misfire by fans, it actually has some of their most emotionally involving work since Gunbuster, and has beautiful animation and monster design to boot. The zombie and monsters take inspiration from Buddhism and Shinto, giving the series a more exotic flavor than your standard zombie series. The first few episodes are fairly conventional, but once you get over that hump, it's excellent stuff if you can handle/ignore/lap up the obvious concessions to otaku.

Azazel-san: I haven't finished this, but I liked it enough halfway through that I think it's worth a look. It's a dirty, crass comedy about demons and the worst bits of humans nature, featuring a detective agency that summons demons for their work. They're usually hired to dig up dirt on someone else, and with the help demons, diligently fulfill their job and more, usually finding dirt on their own clients. It's directed by another under-appreciated talent, Tsutomu Mizushima, who might be the funniest director working in anime today that nobody knows about. Each episode is only fifteen minutes long, so it shouldn't take long for you to figure out if it's worth your time.

Right now? Pay off some debts, but that's a boring answer. The fun one would be buy a couple of new-ish video games I've been dying to play, then some new music, then beef up my anime collection.

Interestingly, how much time I spend on those hobbies would actually be listed in reverse order, but because I already have so many anime DVDs I haven't watched yet, and have so many series available online for free, my priorities get reversed.

To start, gin and tonic with extra lime. Then, depending on what kind of food you serve, either a dark ale, a double IPA, or bourbon and coke.

I'm not sure how Daryl goes about figuring who gets that moniker, but I've avoided getting it so far. Maybe when I finish this "hey guys I liked K-On!!" review, that will change. And I have no idea if that's a good thing.
