oh hai! ok, lemme try this "Rant" thing you like to do.
Capitalism doesn't even work to that extent. The number of people living in abject poverty, homelessness is trememdous. This means that for a large plurality of the worlds population, they aren't even having their most basic needs.
And then there is what you describe as living in a coma. For the lower-middle and middle classes, we most certainly HAVE our basic needs taken care of. But we're spiritually dead. We spend roughly 8 hours of everyday doing alienated labour. Minus the time of commute, most people don't have the time to do the basic things they enjoy in life. This lack of time for the majority of the population is why you see a rise in sleep apnea and depression.
Not only that, but we aren't having our dietary needs attended to. Nobody has any time to cook themselves a proper meal, or to do any meaningful excercise. It's no wonder then, that obesity is most prevalent in poorer neighbourhoods. And it's also no suprise that McDonalds saw an enourmous increase in their profit margins come the recession. As a result, we aren't only spiritually alienated, but our health needs aren't being attended to either.
A person living in a coma at least has their health needs taken care of. We don't even get that. Spiritually, we are as dead as a person living in a coma. To be perfectly honest, I fail to see why anybody thinks that Capitalism "works". It doesn't, it never has and it never will. Just because society isn't living in a "Mad Max" style world doesn't automatically mean that whatever system in place is "working". Even if you take the stance that "there's no alternative that works", that doesn't mean you can ignore the constant failiure of Capitalism.
Oh btw, The Monash open day is on the 6th, don't forget! -

Oh damn, DAMN! Thats one good hypothetical. I gotta think about this.....Hmmm, ok, here's what happens, I lie to them and tell them that all but 12 people can come onto the boat. And that those 12 people must volunteer themselves. I then get the 12 volunteers, bring them onto the boat. And leave the rest to drown :D
