Whose cruel idea was it for the word “Lisp” to have a “S” in it?
It's an acronym, deriving from LISt Processing. Since it's been around since 1958 and I've only been around since 1973 (and am not a programmer, or conversant with high-level programming languages), there are probably better people to ask than me, in all fairness.
