In terms of decorations and door gifts etc, if you're planning to prepare some of it yourself, then YES, one year before is the best because it's always better to prepare early so that in the end there's always time to alter, improve and adjust. However, for dress, catering services, photogs and also other titbits it is ok to prepare and book 6 months before because:
1. Your body size might change,
2. There could be more choices, you might change your mind at the last minute
and so on.
However, surveying for choices? You can start as early as now =) -
