I would say that besides study abroad my most memorable experience has been living in dorms with my friends. My favorite memories of school are nights when my housemates and I are hanging out, laughing or watching a favorite TV show. I would trade that time for anything in the world!

The technical theater practicums vary. We have two options: one is costume lab and the other is lights, sound and set. Each lab meets once a week in the afternoon from 2:30-5pm. You work on the Mainstage productions for that semester. So for this semester, costumes will be designed and executed for Tina Howe's "The Art of Dining". In the scenic design lab, you'll be building the set, painting, hanging lights, etc..
Unfortunately I have not taken either of those courses you mentioned; however, I did take Drama and Culture for my first year sem. I had an amazing experience. We read and discussed a variety of dramatic "classics" (Glass Menagerie, Death of a Salesman, Othello). I came to St. Mike's as an Exploratory major and that class heavily influenced my choice to be an English/Theater double.
Hope this helps! -
I think what makes St. Mike's stand out among other liberal arts school is its location. Burlington is an AMAZING college town. There is so much to do from shopping to cafes to great restaurants--most with discounts for college students.
We have the Cultural Pass which for $30 gets us a season pass to the Flynn Theater. I've seen hundreds of dollars worth of off-Broadway shows for $30 a year. We also have the Smuggs Pass that works similarly.
Students here are really active so there's always something to do. We love campus, but we definitely get out there and explore the greater Burlington area as well. Hope this helps! -
The majority of students are SMC are hard-working, kind and willing to give back to the community. Here we really take pride in the community we've created for ourselves and at least 80% of students will work with MOVE (Mobilization of Volunteer Efforts) at some point before they graduate. This is one of my favorite statistics about our student body and I think it really speaks to the kind of person that chooses to come to St. Mike's.
Academically speaking, students here tend to work very hard. The average student at SMC visits the library roughly 70 times per year. Personally, I'm there at least three times a week. Professors are incredibly willing to work with students to ensure learning takes place. In addition, our faculty and staff is highly qualified in their field of study. I'm an English major and I can't tell you how impressed I am with the faculty in my major. They are kind, approachable and active in their field of study. Most students take advantage of the professors' willingness to work one on one with you. -
Student government is a very active part of the college. The E-board or executive board of the Student Association here at St. Mike's handles most everything that goes on for students at the college.
They are the ones who dole out budgets for groups and clubs on campus. They're the body of student leaders who will vote on whether or not a group on campus gets Club status and will then be funded by the SA.
The SA E-board is in touch with the board of trustees at SMC. They are constantly aware of what is going on within our student body and working to make sure the voice of the student community is heard. -
Not wanting to drink at SMC is totally fine! I have a few friends who don't drink, but still go out with us on weekends and really enjoy themselves. Your friends at SMC won't pressure you to drink (if they do, they aren't really your friends). People here are generally very accepting of whatever choice you make regarding alcohol.
In addition, there are a lot of other options for you if you don't want to be around a party scene at all. SMC has a lot of options for the weekend that don't involve drinking. Our resident life program hosts lots of activities like tie-dye, free pizza and movie nights, cooking lessons and many other options for you! It's always great to get a group of people together to do these things. -
I chose St. Mike's because it was a school at which I could see myself. It was the first campus I toured where I knew right away that I could fit in. I loved how active the student body was and to this day, I think that is still one of my favorite things about the college. We are an incredibly active and caring community of students and I think that is really evident when you tour the campus.
Also, I think SMC has some of the greatest professors. I've gotten to know mine on both an academic and personal level because of this, I've had a better educational experience.
Finally, Burlington is probably one of the coolest places to go to college. There's so much to do, great people watching and a ton of good food. Not to mention UVM & Champlain are right around the corner which add to the college atmosphere of the city. -
The best class I ever had was my first year seminar, Drama and Culture, with Professor Clary. For me, it was the first class that helped me realize how different college was than high school. It was definitely a challenge but I don't think I ever learned more in a class or felt better prepared for what college had to offer.

Hands down it was the Billy Joel/Elton John Face to Face Tour I saw when I was in 8th grade!
